Dara O'Kearney wins inaugural Green Joker Poker European Deepstack Poker Championships.

A truly European field of poker players took part in the first ever European Deepstack Poker Championship main event. As well as the local Irish players, there were large contingents from France, The Netherlands, Belgium, Hungary, England, Scotland, Wales and even the United States of America. In-form major title winners such as Julian Thew, Arnaud Mattern, Joe Beevers and Patrice Libert made the trip. EPT winners Julian & Arnuad fell only just short of the money but Joe Beevers mad the final table and cashed for €8000 in 6th. Belgian Open winner (a 700 player €1500 event) Patrice did not fare so well in the main event but he is back tomorrow in the final of the €500 event.

Dara O'Kearney was clear chip leader after the day ones had been completed. After Day two he still held pole position but the field was very tightly packed going into day three.

The lead changed many times during the final day. Young Dublin based players Mark McDonnell, Gary Clarke and Tony Baitson all held the chip lead at some point as did Poker Million winner Joe Beevers.

In the end Dara accumulated a massive chip lead with five to go. The biggest pot coming when he clashed with then chip leader Mark McDonnell, Dara's kings holding up to double through against Mark's AK.

With such a gap between the chip leader and the rest of the field negotions took place to chop up the cash with Dara getting the lions share of the €160,000 they were still playing for.

Overall it was a very well recieved event and one that with a few little tweaks will be come a favourite for many on the European poker scene. It was also a victory for Irish poker in general. Only just over half the field came from Ireland and yet 12 out of the 14 players who finished in the money were Irish.

Peter Heslin takes down the opening event at European Deepstack Poker Championships.

A tough field of 97 players took part in the opening event of The European Deepstack Poker Championships run by Green Joker Poker in The Drogheda Poker Club. There are not many 6 handed tournaments to be found in Europe and certainly not with 20,000 starting chips and a one hour clock. This is probably the reason why there were players from all over Europe descending on the biggest town in Ireland this weekend. 9 Frenchman, two from Switzerland, a German, two Scots, some Americans and a host of players from the UK and Ireland stumped up the €550 required to take part in this uinque event.

Amongst the runners were WPT runners up Ludovic Lacay and Joe Grech, Guillaume De La Gorce, Jim Reid, Rob Taylor, Paul Leckey, Michael Muldoon, Sylvester Geoghegan and Pokerstars Team Ireland captain Daniel Bolton.

It was Daniel Bolton who made the early running but he was caught and overtaken by Paul Fitzpatrick who was sat to his left all of Day one. They led the field of 24 players who made it through to day two but neither could continue their form and both failed to make the money.

Drogheda local Mal Byrne looked to be in control by the time the final table was reached, at one point he had 820,000 of the 1,940,000 chips in play but ended up finishing 5th.

Peter Heslin came to the fore at the final table and by the time he and Shuan Wang were heads up he had a commanding lead with nearly 1,600,000 chips. Shuan managed to double up once but then having lost a few back to Peter the crucial race was won when Shuan's pocket 3's were no match for Peter's A5s.

Peter took home €13,600. No deals were done and all the players we spoke to could not speak highly enough of the great structure this tournament provided. All bodes well for the rest of the festival with 4 more events to come including the main event which gives 50,000 starting chips for the €1500 entry fee. Drogheda Hotels will be filling up with star poker players from all over Europe such as Joe Beevers, Michel Abecassis, Julian Thew, Barny Boatman, David Colcough, Jerome Bradpeice and Mickey Wernick.

Anyone looking to play this event can qualify for as little as €110 in a Super Satellite being held at the Drogheda Poker Club on Tuesday 5th Feb, 8pm. For more details see www.greenjokerpoker.com

Other Team Winamax players making the trip are Guillaume De La Gorce and Anthony Roux.

The international flavour is continued with players registered already from Sweden, Norway, Austria, Germany, The Czech Republic, The Netherlands, Malta, Jersey and the UK.

Poker million winner Joe Beevers and Two times GUKPT winner Julian Thew will be also looking to add to their recent successes by taking down the main event title. They will be joined by fellow Uk players Jen Mason, David Lloyd, David Maudlin, Ben Turnstill, Barny Boatman, Chris Hall and Adam Goulding in the hunt for first place.

Irish players will obviously feature strongly with the likes of Rob Taylor, Paul Leckey, Ivan Donaghy, Micky McCloskey, Peter Heslin, Gavin Kelly, Lloyd O'Farrell, Michael Trimby, Michael Muldoon and Colette Doherty all likely to contend.

Rising young Irish talents John O'Shea, Andrew Grimason, Adam Fallon, Rory Rees, Eoghan O'Dea are all looking to book their first major live win.

Drogheda locals Niall 'The Poet' Murphy, Baz Hand and Fran Egan will all be looking to keep the trophy in the Boyne Valley.

Jay O'Toole Wins Irish Rankings!

Dublin based poker player Jay O'toole has finished top of the Antes Up Irish Rankings for 2007. A runner up finish in the Green Joker Poker Festival main event and two chops in Sporting Emporium events helped him edge past Rob Taylor and Thomas Nolan. Sponsors Green Joker Poker will be presenting the top three with their prizes at the upcoming European Deepstack Championships in February.

Top 3

Jay O'Toole €2500
Rob Talyor €1500
Thomas Nolan €1000

The rankings will continue in 2008 with a €5000 added by Green Joker Poker. Ranking tables will be published on Antes Up from February onwards.

Rob Taylor Get Sponsorship Deal!

Irish professional poker player Rob Taylor has landed a sponsorship deal with Green Joker Poker.

Taylor, who was the second ranked Irish player in 2007 will play all 10 Grosvenor UK Poker Tour events this year starting with the Brighton leg this week.

Mike Lacey of Green Joker Poker, said of the deal, "Rob has always shown a great commitment to GJP.  He is always wearing his GJP hoodie at events whether qualified on our site or not and spreading the word about our events. This combined with his excellent tournament record adds up to a great proposition for both Rob and GJP and allows us reciprocate his loyalty."

Taylor, who plays the Brighton GUKPT tomorrow, said,  "Thanks to Mike and Brian and everyone connected with GJP for this opportunity. Hopefully, with 10 legs to concentrate on, I can get at least one major result and I'm really looking forward to the first leg in Brighton."

Green Joker Poker is one of Europe's fastest growing poker rooms and also one of its most innovative live tournament organizers. The company is currently getting set for its European Deep Stack Poker Championship taking place in the Drogheda Poker Club, Drogheda, Ireland from Feb. 2-10, 2008.

Antes Up in 2008!

Over the next few weeks Antes Up will be getting a new makeover to ensure that we are able to bring you the best in news from the Irish Poker scene.

The Irish Rankings will continue. We are chasing down the last few results from 2007 before we publish the final table. It looks like Jay O'Toole is going to sneak it ahead of Rob Taylor and Thomas Nolan. Full results will be published before the European Deepstack Poker Championships and all prizes will be awarded then.

Any tournament organisers or card rooms running qualifying tournaments please let us know well in advance and also make sure we get the results promptly to make sure that the rankings can be fully representative.
